R1 new corner wall in Johannesburg

South African Artist R1 created an amazing mural in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. “The streets are the veins of a city. They gather, transport and transform our daily experiences and interactions. We can read a city by its streets, the same as we can read a sample of blood from a body. Shared spaces became the place where new collective identities are formed.” – R1

With this introduction by R1 we can understand the idea behind of this amazing artist. His last project involved not only the wall itself but the whole city by using one of the most common parts of the city, which are the road signs. The result is a beautiful corner wall full of colours and an amazing geometric shape.

Words of the artist:

“I recently completed a new work which consists of 172 chromadek plates installed onto a corner building wall in Johannesburg CBD. The size is 23 meters high by 6 meters wide. The work was inspired by a common chevron street sign that I cut in half & reassembled to use in a new creative way.

What I I love about the work is due to its placement on the corner wall, creates a 3D like effect. It makes the artwork seem to pop out of the building, creating a sculptural-like mural.”

Great mural R1!!
