MonkeyBird paint monumental stencil tribute to Burgos Cathedral

StARTer Proyectos Culturales present ”Mymesis, beings and places” in the context of the VIII Centenario of
the Burgos´s Cathedral.
This monument declared World Heritage site in 1984 is the result of the work of many creators and patrons
who dreamed of creating a unique and sacred place. Today, in the XXI century, Burgos´s Cathedral continues
to reinvent itself and artists continue to observe it with admiration and respect, generating new works
around it.

On this occasion, the French duo Monkey Bird have made a personal approach towards centuries-old architecture, transferring a whole universe of symbols from the interior to the exterior. Born in Bordeaux, they have a long career that has led them to paint in places such as United Arab Emirates,India, Mexico, Netherlands and Ireland, among others. With their monumental aesthetics full of mythological references and classical architectures, together with their singular color code, they acquire an unique identity in the international urban art scene.

With this wall the artists wanted to pay tribute to the communities of artisans and builders, which thanks to their thorough and exuberant works endowed Burgos´s Cathedral with the wealth and beauty that make it up.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Burgos Cathedral is how it reflects a rich succession of artistic styles,
spanning classic Gothic to Baroque, to generate an eclectic, yet deeply harmonious, building “Our intention was to offer an effect of complex depth and monumentalism, combining some of the most spectacular references from the temple, such as the main altarpiece, with its many details, the Golden Staircase or the circular oculus in the center of the Santa María façade.

As a symbol of good luck for the community, we have represented in the center the protector of the town, Guardian Angel, who under the guise of a gray heron is shown as a symbol of light and rebirth, flanked by two other angels whose original models they are in the upper part of the temple. This Cathedral is unique in Spain in terms of finishes created with sculptures of angels.

The small birds represented in the work a typology of birds call “papamoscas cerrojillo”, which usually nest in the cavities of the stone, making a nod to the famous automata clock from the XVIII century present in the building. After having lived closely with the catastrophe of Notre Dame, we measure the size but also the fragility of these treasures that we must know how to protect, whatever our beliefs, they are a testimony that man is capable of great things when he works for his community in the name of beauty. ”

This project -Mymesis, beings and places- grows in the street to generate a visual dialogue with the public
about Heritage and contemporary culture.

This project has been possible thanks to the collaboration of the Fundación VIII Centenario de la Catedral de
Burgos, the Alliance Française de Burgos, the French Embassy in Spain, as well as Montana colors.
