Barcelona based artist Elbi Elem recently did a series of spatial interventions during her stay at the Konvent Punt Zero artist residence in Berga, Catalonia. An incredible cultural center located in the convent of the old textile Colony Cal Rosal. A space that promotes art, culture, experimentation, research, creativity and expression of all kinds of contemporary artists.
The project was mainly based on experimentation and research in developing a new concept recently created during the time of confinement but on a larger scale. “ Geometrias Variables” was an idea that arose from wanting to draw with thread and make a set of geometric drawings inside a book, using the different planes of the book to make them float three-dimensionally. In this case, by changing the dimensions, the material used was cord, wanting to remind of the factory’s past, which was once a textile factory.
The space of the old factories of Cal Rosal, was perfect to try different techniques until the desired effect was achieved, being this one to achieve the perception of really being sewing the walls, as if it was a wound and suture, perforating them and crossing them, without using any visible element for its subjection.
I also wanted to make a suspended composition of geometric shapes aligned with each other, without the use of knots, joining both ends so that they look like a unit. To do this I stretched the material progressively, from the precise points making it originally flexible in nature to be transformed to appear rigid, due to the tension exerted on it. This seemed to me to be interesting at the same time because it shows the ductility of the material and the perception we had after acting on it.
