The Greek islands reveal their history, their myths and traditions, through a unique series of visual interventions of public murals and participating actions of the residents. In recent years, several actions have been implemented on the Greek islands and particularly in remote areas, mostly targeted at providing medical care, providing equipment such as computers in schools and municipalities, heating needs coverage, environmental programs, etc.
Urbanact has been receiving requests from organizations, clubs, associations, foundations, municipalities, private individuals, schools, etc. in the past years for the restoration of their spaces with murals and street art actions.
Several of these invitations come from “bordering” regions with more recent the one from the Municipality of Agios Efstratios in the Northwest Aegean. On the occasion of these “invitations” Urbanact proceeds to the implementation of a unique integrated pilot project “Coloring the Greek Islands” with the support and exclusive donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
The program “approaches” the islands through a different perspective: that of promoting the traditions, the myths and history of each place through the creation of public murals in public buildings, with thematic co-decided with the communities and municipalities and with the participatory action of the inhabitants. Details that will remind visitors of the history of the place and will motivate a respect in the region. And for the residents a stimulus to look into the memories and continue with courage and hope in the future.
With these special actions, we support local tradition and history to highlight it with street art, a contemporary innovative art that also has its roots in tradition.
We trot out from its “oblivion” the importance of wall paintings in our country , the murals and the colors and the decisive role they had in life in the psyche and the “communication” of the inhabitants.
During the program the participating artists Kez, Pupet and Same84, will perform a series of public murals and participatory actions of the public for one month at the following points:
28 June – 6 July, Agios Efstratios, Harbour Pier
9 July-19 July, Fournoi, concrete point in country
19 July-24 July, Lipsi, port, school and city point
July 25 – July 31, Leros, Harbour Pier Panteli
Everyone is invited to experience this special action and participate in moments of joy.
