Festival Inspire presents the CreatorClass

Festival Inspire is now launching their newest invention: the Inspire Creatorclass; an art response to festival bans.

Applications are now open for Creation Grants for Moncton based artists, in a program that provides production support and mentorship from international artists. Collaborative efforts will result in individual works of art for public spaces. The process of creation will also be accessible to the public, all through digital platforms.

Festival Inspire was never like the other festivals. While other events came and went, the out of the box Inspire was building a lasting cultural legacy to “Make Moncton cool enough for us to stay”.

At home with transformation, the festival team was proactive within the first week of the pandemic. Covid cocooning in Inspire terms meant coming up with an entirely new, social-distance-respecting model that still accomplished most of the targets within the festival’s mission. That is, to employ artists, activate public space, make the city more walkable, bikeable, and interactive, make safer our neglected spaces, create a downtown attraction for locals and a reason to visit for those from away.

Recognizing that the most important role of the festival right now is to help the artists in our community create and be paid for their work, the Inspire Creatorclass was born. The program aims to also inspire the public, by taking art from behind the ever more closed doors and putting it right into our streets and directly into our living rooms.

Creatorclass invites artists and placemakers in Greater Moncton to create space-changing projects. Projects approved by an appointed jury will be funded and managed by the festival. Selected artists will benefit from mentorship from renowned international artists and production support from the team.

“All of the essential elements of the festival are there in this model, even the social and public interaction piece (without the party I guess). Greater Moncton artists will be at the heart of the creation this year, but this time they’ll have even more opportunity to work with our renowned artists from around the world through our Creatorclass Platform. The program is a one of a kind because we designed it ourselves. I think it really puts Moncton on the map in a whole new way.”

Residents of Moncton will have the chance to witness the creation, just as they have for the past 6 years as the murals brought our streets to life. This time, local artists will be inviting the public to see what’s ‘behind the scenes’ in their studios and discover the birth of their ideas and methods. They’ll have the chance to ask questions at the Creatorclass Studio Sessions.

“We’re really excited to be in the position to help local artists financially and by connecting them with mentors from around the world. Not just that, we’re able to include everybody from behind their own closed doors, who crave art and culture, colour, and connection. I can’t wait to see the amazingly collaborative works that come out of this year.”

Applications will open on Friday May 15th and all details will be available on www.festivalinspire.com/creatorclass
