Globally established artist Ben Eine is regarded as a pioneer in the exploration of letterforms and is also notorious across the world for his iconic street art, created in distinctive font styles. To celebrate the launch of Creative Design Studio OurTypes and the art of letterform, Eine is returning to his roots and is hitting the streets of East London’s Poplar in colour, to create an Alphabet City 2.0 on a gigantic scale over a series of 26 shop shutters.
This exciting evolution from the ‘Alphabet Street’ nearly a decade ago, is an ambitious art mission, in association with Global Street Art and Housing Association Poplar HARCA, which will see Eine paint the full A-Z of the alphabet on 26 shop shutters, in 26 different bespoke, Eine fonts. In the case of some letters, Eine has collaborated from the shop owners to allocate a relevant letter to their shutter leaving behind the ultimate art endorsement.
In honour of OurTypes, each letter will be an exploration in creative type, illustrating how Eine’s syle has evolved over the years. The project will add a bold display of colour and style, to brighten up and beautify this corner of London’s East End, using the shop shutters as a canvas for the craft of one of the world’s leading type artists and putting Alphabet City firmly on the map of global street art.
About Ben Eine:
Born and living in London, Ben Eine is one of the most successful letterform artists in the world and is regarded as a pioneer in the exploration of contemporary typography art. Originally a graffiti writer, Eine started his career over 30 years ago, leaving his first tag all over London before developing his distinct typographic style. Eine first came to prominence in the “commercial” graffiti scene through his symbiotic partnership with London graffiti artist Banksy.
His international acclaim was heightened when the UK Prime Minister David Cameron gifted his ‘Twenty First Century City’ artwork to President Obama in 2010. His work is now held in the permanent collections of the V&A Museum London, The Museum of Modern Art Los Angeles, San Francisco’s Museum of Contemporary Art and numerous other museums and commercial institutions. In 2018 Eine unveiled the largest street art work in the world; the ‘CREATE’ mural – a 17500 square foot artwork painted on industrial ground in East London that is visible from space.
Founded by Ben Eine, OurTypes is a fresh, new innovative Creative Design Studio merging clients with the creative talent of leading artists around the world. Launched 23rd July 2019. www.ourtypes.com
