“DEBRIS” by Vhils

June 01, 2017 to November 05, 2017

This is the second installment of an ongoing series of traveling solo exhibitions by Vhils.
The first was presented last year in Hong Kong, following a year-long artist residency in the city during which Vhils conducted research and explored his new visual and cultural surroundings. The concept of the series of exhibitions is to build upon the body of works presented in each city it travels to, thus creating a reflection on the similarities and differences between each local environment and its identity.
For this second installment, and his first solo exhibition in Macau, Vhils will create new works inspired by the territory alongside some of the works presented last year in Hong Kong. These will comprise works in billboards, carved wooden doors, acid-etched metal plates, screen prints, styrofoam sculptures, neon compositions and video installations. Along with the wall carved inside the exhibition, Vhils will also create four new carved murals in the streets of Macau as a tribute to the city’s residents: at Macau Portuguese School (Avenida de D. João IV), at Rua dos Clérigos (Old Taipa Village, Taipa), and KEI TAC Grocery (Rua Direita Carlos Eugénio, Taipa). Through these interventions, the artist draws a connecting line between the city and the artworks, and firmly ties his artistic practice to his origins as an artist making markings in the streets.
